1. Gorilla Trekking
The highlight of any visit to Bwindi. Trekking starts early morning with a briefing by rangers before heading into the forest in small guided groups.
You can track one of more than 20 habituated gorilla families in sectors like Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo.
The hike can last from 30 minutes to several hours depending on the gorillas’ movements — and when you finally find them, you’ll spend one unforgettable hour in their presence.
2. Gorilla Habituation Experience
In some sectors, visitors can join the gorilla habituation experience, which allows up to four hours with a semi-habituated family as they get used to human presence.
It’s a deeper, slower, and more personal way to experience Bwindi.
3. Birding & Nature Walks
Bwindi is one of the best birding spots in East Africa. Trails around Ruhija and Buhoma reveal colorful forest birds, butterflies, and plants found nowhere else on Earth.
Guided walks also lead to stunning waterfalls, swamps, and panoramic viewpoints.

When to Visit
Bwindi can be visited year-round, but the best trekking conditions are during the dry months of June - September and December - February.
During the rainy months (March - May, and October - November), trails can be slippery but the forest is at its greenest and least crowded.
Getting There
- By Road: Around 8–9 hours (approximately 500 km) from Kampala or Entebbe via Mbarara and Kabale.
- By Air: Daily flights connect Entebbe to Kihihi or Kisoro, followed by a short drive to your chosen sector.
Bwindi has four main entry sectors: Buhoma (north), Ruhija (east), Rushaga (south), and Nkuringo (southwest). Your trekking permit determines where you stay and enter the park.

Each park sector has a range of options - from luxury eco-lodges to community-run guesthouses.
Buhoma offers the most accessible lodging and classic gorilla treks, while Nkuringo and Rushaga provide stunning views of the Virunga volcanoes and more adventurous routes.
Many lodges are built with local materials and support nearby communities.
Travel Tips
- Expect muddy and steep terrain - sturdy boots and gloves help.
- Pack a light rain jacket; weather changes fast.
- Hire a porter - they’ll carry your pack and support local livelihoods.
- Bring snacks and plenty of water for long treks.
- Maintain a respectful distance (about 7 m) from gorillas and avoid flash photography.
- Book accommodation and permits at least 3 - 6 months in advance, especially in high season.
